Geography & Climate

Santo Antão is the second-largest island and features extremely steep, mountainous terrain with deep ravines and valleys. The topography creates isolated communities and complex geography. The island has slightly higher rainfall than most neighbors, supporting agricultural activities in fertile valleys, but also increasing vulnerability to flooding and landslides during heavy rains.

History

Santo Antão has historically been one of the more agriculturally productive islands in Cabo Verde due to higher rainfall. The island was settled early and developed small communities centered around farming and fishing. Its isolated valleys created culturally distinct communities with unique traditions.

Economy

The island's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with crops including sugar cane, coffee, and tropical fruits. Fishing remains important for coastal communities. Limited infrastructure and geographic isolation make economic development challenging.

Natural Hazards

Santo Antão faces significant risks from flash floods and landslides due to its mountainous terrain and concentrated rainfall patterns. The steep topography makes evacuation and rescue operations extremely difficult during emergencies. These challenges make community preparedness critical.

DNPN Operations

We're expanding our response capacity on Santo Antão by building partnerships with local communities and establishing supply caches. The island's challenging geography requires specialized training and equipment for effective emergency response.
